The Erwin girls achieved a No. 1 state ranking earlier this week, and became the first Mountain Athletic Conference basketball team to reach 15 wins on Saturday.
Gardner-Webb recruit Mariah Reid enjoyed one of her best games of the season with 20 points as the Warriors blew past visiting David Crockett (Tenn.), 72-63.
Erwin (15-1) carried a 23-point lead to halftime thanks to Reid, who also had five rebounds and four assists as well as Dalton Gossett (18 points, six assists and five rebounds) and Kendra Griffin (16 points).
Treasure Bailey added six rebounds and Kasey Kidwell snared four.
The girls win set the stage for the ninth consecutive win by the Erwin boys (11-5).
Alic Wynn controlled the paint with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while Brennan Howard was solid as usual at guard with 25 points. The Warriors are undefeated with the junior wing in their lineup this winter.
Malik Moore (17 points, six rebounds), Dawson Parker (12 points) and C.J. Thompson (11) also attained double figures in the first 100-point game of the season for Erwin.
The Warriors haven’t lost since a game last month at David Crockett (78-75 on Dec. 13), giving the defending MAC 3-A champions the longest winning streak in the league after a 2-5 start.
Next up for both Erwin teams is a trip to North Buncombe on Thursday. The boys game will decide first place in the MAC 3-A division. North Buncombe (13-1, 3-0) has the best overall record of any boys team in the MAC.
