The moves displayed by Freehold Township sophomore Julian Kislin in the video above are difficult to pull off in a video game let alone in the live arena.
However, Kislin and teammate Max Halvorsen completed what is considered to be a goal of the year candidate only two weeks into 2015 and it’s garnered the Freehold Township duo attention on a national scale, as the highlight reel video – provided by Rich Champanis of Shore Sports Zone – has gone viral, landing on such prominent outlets as Yahoo Sports, Barstool Sports, CBS Sports, and ESPN.com, and Sports Illustrated’s online outlet among others.
The video clip even received air time on today’s afternoon editions of Sports Center thanks to a social media campaign featuring the hashtag #SCTop10.
It’s the sort of visibility Kislin wasn’t expecting when he woke up for school this morning.
“I never thought I’d be on television at the age of 15, it’s pretty amazing,” Kislin said. “But credit has to go to Max. If he didn’t finish the goal, it wouldn’t matter.”
But despite the national reaction, Kislin wasn’t convinced of the goal’s beauty immediately after the fact. It took him a few hours of being touted by classmates and bombarded on Twitter before he was able to sit back and appreciate the play in all it’s glory.
“I was in the moment during the game,” Kislin said. “I didn’t really think it was that nice. Then today everyone started posting it and talking about it in school and I was able to see how nice it really was.”
Kislin was working off instincts to maneuver his way through the Middletown North defense, but this is not merely a flukey display by a lucky player. Kislin owns an impressive skill set that earned the defenseman an invitation to the USA Hockey Select 15 Festival in Amherst New York this past summer, an event that recognized the top 1999-born players in the country.
“Some people are saying it was lucky, some are saying it was skill, but I think it was a combination of the two. I’m just glad Max was able to finish it off with a great move…I would’ve been so mad if he didn’t finish it,” Kislin said with a laugh.”
