Watertown (Mass.) set a national high school field hockey record Wednesday with its 154th consecutive game without a loss in a 6-0 win against Melrose. The previous record was held by Eastern (Voorhees, N.J.) from 1999 to 2005.
The team has not lost in six years and has allowed just one goal in its last 41 games.
To mark the occasion, the scoreboard clock was changed to 1:54 and the message “New Nat’l” and “HS Record” displayed in the spot for the team names. Many former players from the streak’s beginning took part in the postgame celebration.
“It’s so special and I’m so proud of all the hard work that my players and coaches have put into this,” said Eileen Donahue, who had been the coach for 30 years. “Once you’re a Watertown player, you’re always a Watertown player.”

Watertown has won six consecutive state titles and has one more regular season game remaining before beginning the playoffs.
“It was a fantastic accomplishment over a very long period of time with many different athletes,” said athletic director Michael Lahiff. “It’s a program and a school and a community achievement because of all of the accolades that have come for the girls.
“People don’t appreciate the record and the many things that go along with it in terms of how tough these girls they play. The coach, I like to call her the Bill Belichick of high school field hockey based on what she’s accomplished. Her record is unbelievable.”
