Jayden Johnson’s seventh-inning suicide squeeze drove in Baylee Small with the winning run Tuesday for host Watkins Memorial in a Division I district first-round win over Hilliard Darby (17-10).
Caitlyn Smith led off with a hit and was replaced by Small as a pinch runner. She stole second and advanced to third, coming home on Johnson’s bunt. Johnson had two hits and scored a run for the Warriors (12-12), Devon Atchison had a hit and a run and Lexi Denison had an RBI double in the fifth.
Carly Brandon replaced starting pitcher Brooke Schindler in the second inning and picked up the win. She allowed four hits in five 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking two.
The 25th-seeded Warriors will play at 11th-seeded Mount Vernon at 5:30 p.m. today for a district semifinal berth.
