Three area girls basketball teams earned No. 1 seeds in their regionals as the brackets were released Sunday for the WIAA Tournament.
Two of the top seeds are in Division 3 where Eastern Wisconsin Conference co-leader Waupun earned a top seed and bye to the regional semifinal, which it will host on Friday, Feb. 27. The Warriors will face the winner of the Mayville at Lomira regional opener, which will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
The other regional opener in that part of the bracket has Watertown Luther Prep at Columbus, with the winner advancing to face second-seeded Poynette.
The other No. 1 seed in Division 3 went to Laconia, which faces the winner of Kewaskum at Ripon in a regional semifinal.
Winnebago Lutheran drew the No. 2 seed in that bracket and also earned a bye in the first round. The Vikings will host the winner of Campbellsport at North Fond du Lac in a regional semifinal.
In Division 4, St. Mary’s Springs earned the No. 1 seed in the regional as the Ledgers look to mount a return to the state tournament. Springs will face either Green Lake/Princeton or Weyauwega-Fremont in a regional semifinal.
The rest of the bracket as Lourdes Academy hosting St. Mary Central with the winner playing second-seeded Markesan.
In addition to the two Division 3 first-round games, three other area teams will be in action when the tournament tips off on Feb. 24.
Fond du Lac hosts, drew the eighth seed in its sectional and will host Appleton East in the first round. The winner of that game earns a date with top-seeded Appleton North in the regional semifinal.
The game is the only contest on Feb. 24 in the bracket.
In Division 5, Oakfield earned the No. 4 seed in its regional and will host fifth-seeded Central Wisconsin Christian in a regional opener. The winner of that game will face either top-seeded Fall River or eighth-seeded Cambria-Friesland.
The other first-round matchups in that region are Hustisford hosting Randolph and Wayland Academy travelling to Rio.
