BELLEVUE – Small ball created the tone as long ball and the arm of Tori Collins did the rest.
Opelousas Catholic established some early offense with the bunting game and Collins drove in six runs with a pair of towering doubles as the Vikings defeated host Westminster Christian Academy 10-3 in a Monday District 5-2A game.
Colins, a lefthander, pitched the entire seven innings and limited the Crusaders to five hits.
OC softball coach Jay Artall said he wanted to put pressure on the Crusaders’ defense and relax his batters, whom he said were a little too anxious in last week’s 9-2 loss to WCA.
The Vikings’ bunting game helped build a 5-0 lead.
“I wanted to get away from having our hitters swing at the ball. The bunting game helped slow our bats down, and it also gave us a chance to see if (WCA) could field the bunts. I thought that worked well for us,” Artall said
Artall also complimented Collins, who managed to win the game despite allowing three earned runs.
“I thought her pitches had more snap on them. I thought she was able to keep (WCA) off balance. They have four good hitters and they really weren’t able to hurt us today,” said Artall.
Westminster pitcher Gabby Lewis, a senior right hander, allowed 10 hits. Lewis also walked four batters. All four of the walked batters scored.
The Vikings led 1-0 at the end of the first after leadoff hitter Anna Lafleur walked, stole second base, moved to third on a bunt sacrifice and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center.
OC opened the game in the second with four more runs.
Lauren Miller singled to start things and scored following a pair of infield errors. Then with two outs, Collins doubled in Madison Nicholas, Molly Little and Lafleur.
The Crusaders scored in the second after Martina Kaiser led off with a single. An error moved her to third and she scored on a fielder’s choice.
Nicholas scored again in the fifth after she singled, stole second and scored on a two-base infield error.
OC followed that with a run in the sixth as Danielle Lafleur scored on Emily Ortego’s triple.
WCA struck for a pair of runs in the fifth. Lewis produced her second single and following a single from Barbara Porche, Lewis scored following an error and an infield ground ball.
Porche added the final run when she scored on an infield error.
OC’s last runs came on Collins’ double in the seventh.
