Tennis athletes and coaches gather under an awning at Old Fort Park while waiting for courts to dry to begin individual championships Thursday morning.

MURFREESBORO — Athletes are bundled and huddled up together.

Most people are wearing jackets and long pants.

Some people can see their breath when they exhale.

This scene isn’t from an early season baseball game or a football playoff game.

It’s from the Thursday of the week of Spring Fling.

Weather that moved through Tennessee Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday preceded a cold front that moved through which resulted in a significant drop in temperature in Middle Tennessee.

The rain caused a one-hour delay for the start of the TSSAA singles and doubles tournaments for the individual championships.

Players are allowed to choose to play if their assigned courts at Old Fort Park are dry enough for them.

As of 9:30, not many courts look promising.

Tennis players from Bolivar, Hardin County, Trinity Christian Academy and University School of Jackson are scheduled to compete today.
