Weather forces postponement of girls playoff games

By

Eastside High girls basketball coach Cindy Mattos-DeHart said she began talking contingency plans regarding the weather with athletic director Scott Erwin last week.

By Monday, it was still a matter of conjecture as to when the Eagles or any of a number of teams would begin the high school basketball playoffs.

Numerous Class A and AAA first-round girls games were postponed Monday because of the inclement weather. Most games were rescheduled for Tuesday, but even that had to be wishful thinking, with the weather expected to remain an issue and schools in at least Greenville and Pickens counties announcing late Monday that school would be canceled Tuesday.

The policy in Greenville and may other counties is that if there is no school, there also are no extracurricular activities allowed.

“If we go, we’ll play, and if we don’t, I guess we’ll just wait and see what happens Wednesday,” Mattos-DeHart said. “That’s not the best scenario, but there are a lot of things we can’t control. Weather’s one of them. Whatever the weather deals is what we deals with, and we go by the guidelines.

“This is just the first round. Once you get further down the line, I’m sure it becomes a more complex issue. But right now everybody’s in the same boat.”

The situation does become more complicated starting Tuesday because the Class AAAA and AA girls playoffs are scheduled to begin along with boys games in Class AAA and A. The Class AAAA and AA boys are scheduled to begin Wednesday. Some schools have their boys and girls teams involved in the playoffs.

The playoff schedule is set up to provide days off for the teams that continue to win, but problems with the weather negate normal rest.

“Our contingency plan is if you can’t play Tuesday, you play Wednesday,” Mattos-DeHart said. “Then you don’t know if you play Wednesday and win, if you’ll play back-to-back, because the next round is Thursday.”

Eastside is scheduled to host Chester in the first round.
