Four stars
Laveen Cesar Chavez (1-1) at Phoenix Alhambra (2-0), 7 p.m.
If you want to see two talented running backs go head to head, here is your chance to watch Alhambra’s Lakel Davis and Cesar Chavez’s Pavone Meyers go back and forth, trying to lead their Division III teams to victory. Could be for the Phoenix Union district title and it is only Week 3.
Best of high school football – 2015
Phoenix Sunnyslope (2-0) at Paradise Valley (3-0), 7 p.m.
You don’t want to miss Paradise Valley senior QB Daniel Bridge-Gadd on his fast surface. Because he is able to escape pressure so well, Bridge-Gadd can bide his time before finding an open receiver. And he’s got plenty of solid targets, led by senior Jacob Brown. Sunnsylope will try to make it uncomfortable for Bridge-Gadd, who works mostly out of an empty backfield.
Top Arizona high school football performances: Week 2
Three stars
Peoria Sunrise Mountain (2-0) vs. Flagstaff (2-0), at NAU Walkup Skydome, 7 p.m.
Is Flagstaff for real under new coach Dave Dirksen? The Eagles already have won as many games as all of last season. They’ll have a better gauge against one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Junior Chase Cord is as good throwing the ball as he is running with it.
On the sidelines at Arizona high school football games 2015
Scottsdale Chaparral (1-0) at Goodyear Desert Edge (1-1), 7 p.m.
Desert Edge began the year ranked No. 1 in Division III. But the season quickly began to unravel, losing star QB Tehran Thomas to an injury in the opener. How Desert Edge adjusts against maybe the best defense it will see is key in this matchup against a top-10 D-I team.
Arizona high school football Super 10 rankings: Week 2
Gilbert (2-1) at Gilbert Williams Field (1-1), 7 p.m.
Williams Field will have to bounce back quickly from a loss to Division I Phoenix Desert Vista. Gilbert usually gets off to a strong start, but has trouble sustaining it. Maybe new coach Derek Zellner can keep the Tigers rolling.
