The Week 6 High Achiever is a male athlete. Ricky Lafleur is a Lafayette High School Sophomore.
Credentials: Ricky LaFleur won the 200 individual medley race with a time of 2:01.22 in last week’s Acadiana area high school swim meet. That came one week after claiming two first-place finishes at the weekly meet.
“He’s been swimming for four years and he’s just a natural in the water,” Crawfish Aquatics swim coach Thomas Clavier said. “He’s another kid who double trains. He goes at 5:30 in the morning and then for two hours in the afternoon. He’s like a lot of the swimmers, a very hard worker.”
Background: LaFleur is currently a sophomore at Lafayette High. He transferred to the Mighty Lions, though, after winning two state championships at the Division IV level at Lafayette Christian as a freshman. LaFleur won the 200 IM state title with a time of 2:04.80 and the 500 freestyle crown with a time of 4:57.01.
Lagniappe: That freshman year success was big for LaFleur considering the fact that he wasn’t even allowed to swim as an eighth grader. During a routine high school physical, it was discovered that LaFleur had a heart arrhythmia condition.

“It’s behind him now,” Clavier said. “He’s been able to put on more weight now. He’s got a lot more endurance.”
