CEDAR RAPIDS, Ia. — JD Goodfellow sure put a stamp on his prep golf career.
The West High senior finished tied for ninth at the Class 4A state tournament Saturday at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. Goodfellow carded a 77 both Friday and Saturday to clinch a spot in the top 10 after two rounds.
The finish continued a fall filled with low scores for Goodfellow, who entered the week with an 18-hole average of 73.29. He qualified for state following a fourth-place finish at districts earlier in the week.
“I was a little nervous at the start, but I calmed down,” Goodfellow said. “It was a good experience. A lot of fun. … It’s cool knowing your top 10 out of all these good players out here.”
Goodfellow ended up 12 shots back of the first-place winner. West Des Moines Valley’s Ben Epperly won the meet with a score of 74 in the first round and 68 in the second.
West coach Don Bristow followed his top player on the course both days and was pleased with the results.
“I let him go,” Bristow said. “I helped him one hole (Saturday) and that was it. The rest of the time he was on his own. He didn’t need my help.
“I’m happy with JD. He’s such a good golfer and I’m glad I can be associated with him. I’m really happy, that’s all I can say.”
Quite the final chapter for Goodfellow, who missed qualifying for the state meet by only two strokes in 2014.
“This put a good end to it,” Goodfellow said.
