West Monroe's John Washington commits to Tulane

West Monroe continued to supply FBS schools with defensive talent as senior defensive tackle John Washington verbally committed to Tulane University.

Washington (6-3, 300) is coming off a year in which he was a District 2-5A first-team selection. Washington also was selected as a LSWA Class 5A all-state honorable mention and the 2014 All-NELA second team defense.

Washington chose the Green Wave over offers from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State and Northwestern State.

Washington was recruited by Tulane defensive line coach Kwahn Drake

“It is a great opportunity for me to get away from home, but not too far away, and experience things,” Washington said. “I felt real comfortable there, it was like home. It is great academics.”

Tulane went 3-9 in 2014, a year after going to the 2013 New Orleans Bowl which was the first bowl game for the program since 2002.

One need the team showed this season was along the defensive line in the 4-3 scheme which Washington was part of at West Monroe.

“It is good for me,” Washington said of the scheme. “It was important to me to see the progress the program has made recently. The coaches came down here and they had a good visit with my parents and me.”

Washington also said he hopes to bring a winning attitude to Tulane after being part of a 5A semifinalist last season at West Monroe and four consecutive District 2-5A championships.

Verbal commitments are nonbinding. National Singing Day is Wednesday, February 4.
