The West Ouachita Chiefs (6-2, 2-1) got a little more than they thought from a spirited Grant Parish Cougars (3-5, 0-3). In the end, West Ouachita’s rushing attack and key defensive turnovers were enough to enable the Chiefs to pull away in the second half to claim a 52-30 District 2-4A victory at West Ouachita’s A.R. “Red” Sims Stadium on Friday night.

All total, West Ouachita racked up 409 yards rushing on 34 carries which averages to 12.4 yards per carry in the game. The Chiefs’ defense created two costly Grant turnovers which helped West Ouachita pick up the 22-point victory.

West Ouachita opened the scoring when junior quarterback Hunter Chatham scored on a run. Chief kicker Austin Davis added the extra point kick as West Ouachita took the early 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Grant responded quickly thanks to a 56-yard pass play between quarterback Hunter Parker and wide receiver Ethan Nugent that brought the Cougars down to the Chiefs’ 10-yard line.

Following a couple of plays that moved Grant to the West Ouachita 1-yard line Ethan Tassin scored on an up the middle touchdown run. Grant elected to go for the 2-point conversion and the Cougars were successful thanks to sweep into the end zone by Deante Lacour to give the Cougars an 8-7 advantage with 11:01 remaining in the first half.

It would take West Ouachita under two minutes to respond as junior running back Andrew Lockhart ripped off a 64 yard run. Chiefs’ running back Dylan Spillers added the two point conversion run to give West Ouachita the 15-8 lead with 9:19 remaining in the half.

With 4:29 remaining in the second quarter, Grant’s LaCour would give the Cougars’ its second lead of the game with a 2-yard touchdown run and 2 point conversion run to make the score 16-15 in favor of the visiting Grant Cougars.

Grant caught the Chiefs off guard on the ensuing kickoff as the Cougars successfully executed an onside kick to retain possession.

Grant drove to the West Ouachita 10-yard line when Parker was crushed by a Chief sophomore defensive end Brandon Knox causing a fumble into the waiting arms of Micah Menard who raced 88 yards for the West Ouachita touchdown. Davis added the extra point kick and the score stood at 22-16 at halftime.

West Ouachita dominated the second half, outscoring the Grant Cougars 30-16 with touchdown runs by Spillers (1-yard touchdown run), Lockhart (65-yard touchdown run), Hayden Hester (4-yard touchdown run) and Tommy Rhodes (3-yard touchdown run).

Lockhard led the Chiefs rushing attack with seven carries for 179 yards and two touchdowns while Chatham added 9 carries for 58 yards with one touchdown for West Ouachita.

West Ouachita will host Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association’s Class 4A top-ranked Neville Tigers (7-0, 3-0) next Friday, at 7 p.m. with first place in District 2-4A on the line.

Next Friday, Grant Parish will return to the road for the third straight week as the Cougars will play the Bastrop Rams (6-2, 2-1).

Cedar Creek 49, Plain Dealing 8: At Ruston, Cedar Creek’s Josh Terral rushed 11 times for 103 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cougars past the Lions on Friday night.

Cedar Creek scored 19 points in the first quarter and 23 more in the second to build a 42-8 halftime lead. Eli Brown had two of Cedar Creek’s six rushing touchdowns. Parker King, Jace Moss and Tanner Disotell also had rushing touchdowns. Disotell also had a receiving touchdown.
