As far as postseason tuneups go, the Jaguars could not have asked for a better matchup than the one they had on Friday at Ashton Brosnham Park.
Down 1-0 at halftime after being pressured by an unfamiliar Tallahassee Chiles team, the Jaguars turned on the gas and returned to form in a 3-1 win in their final game of the regular season.
“I think we have to go and do some work because, defensively, we’re struggling a little bit,” said West Florida High coach Peter Stephens. “We have to fix our defense and see how we can get them to gel again.
“The next three days we’ll be practicing hard, tomorrow and Monday, and see how it goes from there.”
After being pushed around by the Timberwolves offense in the first half, the Jaguars flipped the script in the second.
Five minutes in, Brianna Schubeck took control, racing downfield and firing off a shot which bounced off the Chiles keeper.
Schubeck quickly retained possession and launched one into the back of the net to knot the game.
“I figured we would get more chances at the rate we were going,” said the senior. “After all the chances they had in the first half, I just wanted every (shot) to count.”
The Jags kept the pressure on, taking the lead on a goal from Aminah Al-Ansari and assisted by Sommer Johnson before Schubeck put the game away for good with under 10 minutes to play.
West Florida High’s offensive surge marked a huge turnaround from a first half that saw the Timberwolves outpace the Jagaurs 10-3 on shot attempts.
“(Coach) started us out in a different formation and I think it just took a little bit for us to adjust,” Schubeck said. “I felt like the second half we played more as a team and worked more together.
“Once we had the momentum it just kept on going for us.”
Seeded No. 2 in next week’s District 1-3A tournament, the Jaguars will take the field on Wednesday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Choctawhatchee and Escambia.
Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at tournament host Washington.
