Euless Trinity elevates Chris Jensen to HC with De La Dalle opener looming.

Euless Trinity elevated Chris Jensen to head football coach Monday. Jensen has been offensive coordinator under retiring coach Steve Lineweaver and was a heavy favorite to be the successor at a highly successful program.

The DeSoto school board meets Monday and could name a successor to Claude Mathis, who left after seven years to become an SMU assistant.

At Trinity, Jensen and defensive coordinator Donald Tyron were established early as leading candidates. Jensen a longtime staffer for Lineweaver since arriving 1990 and was the National Football Foundation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010. Tyron has stuffed some of the top passing offenses in country in and the Longview grad (Class of ’87) is another original staffer. Tryon is expected to remain on staff but has been involved in several high-profile coaching searches in recent years as well.

Trinity will open its season in a highly anticipated matchup with Concord De La Salle of California. Trinity won state titles in 2005, 2007, 2009 and played in 2010 state final. Trinity (12-2) lost to eventual state champ Allen in a 30-27 thriller before 20,000 in Denton in the 6A state quarterfinals. Trinity will play California power De La Salle in its 2015 season opener at a North Texas venue to be determined.

Jensen is a Commerce native who came with Lineweaver after a successful tenure together at the northeast Texas school. A 1989 Stephen F. Austin graduate, Jensen spent seven of his 10 years at Commerce under Lineweaver.

At DeSoto, offensive coordinator Todd Peterman is a likely successor but Little Elm coach Kendrick Brown is the former DeSoto defensive coordinator who left after the 2013 season.
