The Pittsburgh Penguins first two pre-season games took place on Monday September 21, and Tuesday September 22 taking on the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Monday night in Columbus, the Penguins took on the Jackets in hopes to kick off the start of the pre-season with a big win. The Jackets went with rookie goal tender Joonas Korpisalo, while the Penguins went with goal tender Jeff Zatkoff. The game was a hard fought battle by the Penguins and after three periods of play plus overtime there was still no score. During a shootout Pittsburgh Penguins forward Beau Bennett scored the lone shootout goal to push the Penguins past the Jackets in a 1-0 shootout victory. Crosby, Malkin, and Kessel were not in the lineups for this game.
Tuesday night the Penguins traveled back to Pittsburgh to take on the Carolina Hurricanes. After their 1-0 shootout win against the Jackets the Penguins still had a win mentality. The Penguins started Marc-Andre Fleury for the game. During the first period, it was a scoring explosion with the Penguins leading 4-2 after one period of play. After the second period, the score was 7-3. The final score of the game was 7-3. All the Penguins star players including Crosby, Kessel, and Malkin played in the game.
A student from Chartiers Valley High School was interviewed on their thoughts of the games. “I think the Penguins played a couple of great games these past couple days. I think that they definitely do better with their star players in the lineup but it’s only preseason. They have to get their star players warmed up for the beginning of the regular season so they can be the best they can be.”
