New Georgia state champion Wheeler wants in to the Dicks National High School Invitational basketball tournament. The representatives for the event would certainly like to host them. There’s just one trouble: The Georgia High School Activities Association isn’t about to let them go.
Enter change.org. On Monday night, the website for user-based petitions was used as a conduit for Wheeler supporters to launch a write-in campaign to get the GHSAA to relax its stance in order to let Wheeler in on the Dick’s National fun.
Here’s the full text of Wheeler’s petition:
This national tournament is very important to the Wheeler basketball team because if GHSA allowed Wheeler to join, the team would be able to showcase their talent and represent the state of Georgia in a very prestigious basketball tournament.
Additionally, Wheeler’s basketball team is the only team to beat Montverde Academy (the #1 team in the nation) in three years and some of team’s achievements are winning the state title and the City of Palms. If the team can win the state championship and also win another famed basketball tournament, then they should be definitely be allowed to participate in another high level basketball tournament.
Please support this petition so we can positively represent the state of Georgia in this national high school tournament.
The petition was started by Brian Kim and attracted more than 200 signatures within its first two hours of existence. Of course, that gives little reason to inspire confidence that the GHSAA will reverse course and allow Wheeler into high school’s big dance. It won’t hurt, mind, but the odds of seeing Wheeler take on the likes of Montverde Academy again this season still seems more pipe dream than petition to success.
