Nickolette Dunbar placed sixth in the shot put at the World Youth Games in Cali, Colombia.
Dunbar had her best throw, 16.9 meters (55-1.5) on her third preliminary attempt with the three-kilogram shot. Sophia Rivera, the other American, finished second overall at 17.93m (58-10).
Julia Ritter of Germany crushed the competition at a personal-best 18.53 meters (60-9.5).
Dunbar, a rising senior at Whippany Park, had thrown her own PR of 17.36m (56-11.5) on her first attempt in the morning qualifying round.
“You’re going to have on a USA jersey, and everyone’s going to see us differently,” Dunbar said before departing for Colombia. “We’re representing the whole country, instead of our school or our group of people.”
