FISHERSVILLE – Wilson came into Friday night’s matchup with Page County in need of a win to improve their chances of making post-season play.
The Hornets were coming off the heels of a tough loss to East Rock last week.
Hornet fans have a lot to celebrate with a 53-0 win on their Senior Night and Military Appreciation night.
It was a defensive struggle early, highlighted by Garret McBee coming up with a big interception in the red zone to kill Page’s second drive of the night.
After a slow offensive start for Wilson, Kyle Coombe finally broke open for an 80-yard touchdown run to give the Hornets a 7-0 advantage late in the first quarter.
Following a Panther turnover, McBee tossed a 24-yard pass on a short field to help set up a Logan Leche touchdown run. Following a quick three and out, the Hornets wasted no time as Jesse Trent rambled 60 yards for Wilson’s third touchdown in less than a three minute span.
The second quarter started the same for the Panthers, who turned the ball over on downs at their own 46. Billy Coombe took advantage of the short field and capped off the drive with a 25 yard toss to Keyton Boysen to put the Hornets up by 27.
The Hornets assault continued into the Panthers next drive when Kyle Coombe came up with a huge interception off of Panthers’ QB William Hart, and ran it all the way in extending the Hornet lead.
Coombe added to his career night with another 11-yard touchdown run late in the quarter to put the game effectively out of reach early. Coombe put up 146 yards on the ground in the first half to lead the Hornets.
The second half provided a couple more Hornet scores, with Jason Goff scoring from eleven yards out on the first drive and Billy Coombe tacking on another touchdown run late in the third quarter.
The Hornet defense was solid throughout, forcing five turnovers, and the Panthers were only allowed two trips all night into the red zone.
With the win, Wilson improves to 4-6 on the year and are likely to be headed to the playoffs next Friday. Page dropped to 1-9 to close out their season.
Wilson Memorial players carry flags to honor America and veterans before the start of a football game played in Fishersville on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015.
