New Albany's 11-12 squad will start play Aug. 9 in Indianapolis
The New Albany Little League 11-12 team has its eye on another run at the Great Lakes Regional.
The team won its second straight state championship last week to advance and will begin play Aug. 9 in Indianapolis.
New Albany conquered Highlands 8-1 in the state semifinal, scoring seven runs with three home runs in the top of the seventh inning. New Albany then stopped Bedford 3-1 in the state final.
New Albany, which features 10 players from a recent 9-10 state title team, is only the fourth team in the last 50 years to win back-to-back state crowns.
“We knew we had a shot after last year’s run,” coach Josh Biven said. “We’ve got a lot of grit and fight in us.”
New Albany will meet the Ohio state winner in its opening game of regional play. The regional is a six-team, double-elimination tournament.
“Whatever else we do from here is icing on the cake,” Biven said.
The Great Lakes champion will advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
Biven’s New Albany team was retroactively named the 2014 Great Lakes Regional champion after the Chicago squad was found to have used ineligible players from outside its designated region.
