SPARTANBURG – The Wofford College men’s golf team began its spring schedule on a winning note.
The Terriers captured the weather-shortened Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Hilton Head Island this week.
After day one, Wofford led by nine strokes and finished seven better than Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern, which tied for second. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the final two rounds.
Wofford teammates Andrew Novak and Jeremy Grab finished at an par-144 to tie two other golfers for third place. Brannan Hudson of Wofford tied for ninth at 146. Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston won the individual title with a 2-under 142.
“It’s a great way to start the spring,” Terriers coach Vic Lipscomb said. “We’ve got a pretty good team, and every one of them had been playing well in the weeks leading up in qualifiers.”
Including the fall tournaments, Wofford has two firsts and a pair of second-place finishes. The Terriers will play in the Davidson Invitational in Cornelius, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday.
•Senior Rob Galloway, the No. 1 singles player for the men’s tennis team, was selected the Southern Conference player of the week for Feb. 16-23.
The Greenville native has has an 8-2 record after collecting Wofford’s only point in a 4-1 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday. He won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
In a released statement, Wofford tennis coach Rod Ray said, “Rob Galloway has done the work to get the recognition of player of the week. He continues to improve, and I’m excited about the future.”
The Terriers have earned two of the three player of the week awards this spring. Haris Poric, a sophomore from Sydney, Australia, won Feb. 10.
Galloway and Poric team up in doubles and are 6-1 on the season.
•The football team begins spring practice at 6 p.m. Monday.
Coach Mike Ayers and his staff will lead the team through 15 practices that include scrimmages at 10 a.m. on March 14 and March 28.
The Terriers open the 2015 season Sept. 5 at Clemson.
•Wofford added another signee to its football recruiting class: Graham Massey, a safety from Marietta, Georgia.
Massey will know at least one person at Wofford. His twin brother, Reed, signed to play baseball for the Terriers.
