Coming off a 5-6 record and first-round playoff exit in 2014, Wossman football coach Dean Smith decided to shake things up.
He brought in former NFL defensive lineman and Wossman alum Pat Williams, previously coaching at Sterlington, to be defensive line coach.
Smith also hired Cedric Goins of Rayville to be offensive coordinator.
The team is looking to make a tempo and spacing on offense that will play to the strengths of quarterback Cameron Lewis.
Lewis, a four-star recruit committed to LSU, is expected to do a little bit of everything for the Wildcats. Lewis should be used on both offense and defense. The new tempo on offense should give the Wildcats plenty of opportunity to get Lewis in space.
“I have been really pleased the way the guys are picking up the new offense,” Smith said. “We just have to keep showing up and getting better. (Goins) has a different way of doing things and they kids have picked up a lot (over the summer).”
Following his verbal commitment to LSU in the spring, the recruiting process has not really slowed down for Lewis as coaches still come by and call to pitch Lewis on being part of their college program before National Signing Day next year.
Lewis also recently got the honor of being one of the top players in the state to be featured on the cover of Louisiana Football Magazine.
“It is real pride for us that he was selected,” Smith said. “It is big that people are taking notice of our program early in the year.”
A trickle down effect of this recruitment of Lewis is the motivation it is providing young Wildcats who have a chance to play college football later if they take care of business on the field and in the classroom.
“They see the hard work and they see they have a chance and the more coaches come it gets other guys a chance to be seen,” Smith said. “I think (junior) tight end/left tackle Donovan Ashley is one of those (next year).”
The Wildcats skill players have been put to the test in recent weeks after working out three times per week throughout the summer.
Wossman took on Cedar Creek in 7-on-7 drills last week and will battle Franklin Parish on Thursday.
