TRENTON – A major decision by Rob Ruggiero and a pin by his twin brother Cliff Ruggiero in the first two pins got Brick Memorial off and running to a 53-15 win over Hunterdon Central Sunday in the NJSIAA Group V championship match at Sun National Bank Center.
The group championship was Brick Memorial’s Shore Conference-record ninth overall, second in the last three seasons, fourth in the last eight seasons and first under second-year head coach Mike Denver.|
Rob Ruggiero (152) defeated Nick Taylor 15-5 and Cliff Ruggiero (160) pinned Joe Scerbo 1:20.
Hunterdon Central won the next three bouts to pull within 10-9 before junior Chris Hayes (220) defeated Victor LaCombe 6-1 on a five-point move in the final 10 seconds of overtime. Nick Rivera (heavyweight) followed with a pin in 1:30.
Consecutive pins by Gianni Ghione (113), Luis Bocalman (120) and Jose Bocalman (126) extended a 19-15 lead to 37-15 with three bouts and clinched the match.
Ghione’s pin came over Hunterdon Central’s highly-touted Peter Nace.
Anthony Mitchell (138) also pinned for Brick Memorial, which had 11 pins in its two matches on the day.
Brick Memorial defeated North Bergen, 43-15, in the semifinal
