NORTH FOND DU LAC – For the second straight year, the Lomira wrestling team finished just one win away from making it to state as a team.
After topping Sheboygan Falls in the Division 2 semifinal, Wisconsin Lutheran showed why it was the fifth-ranked team in the state.
The Vikings won all but three matches in a 41-19 win over the Lions in the sectional final meet Tuesday night held at North Fond du Lac High School.
“They over-powered us,” Lomira coach Dave Meyer said, “Some of our guys were going up against highly-ranked kids. We had the lead and I thought maybe we could keep building that but we lost some matches that we could have won. It would have made things interesting.”
After a rocky start to the match, where Lomira saw itself down 17-6 – getting its only points from a forfeit at 120-pounds – the Lions won three consecutive matches to take a 19=17 lead at the halfway point.
But Wisconsin Lutheran was able to answer, winning the last six matches – two by pin – to pull away.
“Those two pins they had in the upper weights did it,” Meyer said of WL’s late pins to make it a 38-19 match. “We did well in the lightweights.”
Colin Saegert (152-pounds), Mitch Garriety (160) and Jordan Michael (170) picked up Lomira’s only wins, all coming in a row. Saegert won by major decision, 20-6 and Michael won by decision, 4-0. Garriety pinned his opponent in 5 minutes, 35 seconds.
Riding the 3-match win streak, Sage Pastorius and Collin Feucht lost close decisions, which gave the advantage to Wisconsin Lutheran, 23-19. Pastorius lost 6-4 while Feucht lost 4-3.
It was the second straight year the Lions just fell short of making it to state as a team, but Meyer has to switch the team’s focus to Saturday, where Lomira still has 11 of its 14 individuals left.
“We have a lot of young kids and they will have to decide to get over this hump and get stronger,” Meyer said. “We’ll have to take an easy approach to practice and let them recover from this. We need to get back into the frame of mind of being successful and get some state qualifiers.”
Lomira 34, Sheboygan Falls 24
It took a wild finish, but the Lomira wrestling team won its sectional semifinal dual meet with Sheboygan Falls Tuesday night.
A back and forth meet, the Lions held on for a 34-24 win over the Falcons. Lomira’s sectional final dual meet with Wisconsin Lutheran ended too late to be included in Wednesday’s print edition of The Reporter.
Hanging on to a 17-14 lead with six matches left, Lomira picked up six points after Sheboygan Falls forfeited at 170 pounds so they could move a man up.
That move hurt the Falcons.
Collin Feucht then added a major decision at 182-pounds, giving the Lions a 27-14 lead with just four matches left. Feucht won 11-1.
“When they forfeited at 170 and moved their guy up, that was huge too with how Collin took charge of that match,” Lomira coach Dave Meyer said. “That pretty much sealed the deal for us.”
Sheboygan Falls went on to win the next match by major decision to make it 27-18 and then things got interesting.
Lomira’s Harley Walter was pinned with just seven seconds left with two matches left, allowing the Falcons to make it 27-24. Walter was only down by a few points until Sheboygan Falls’ Brady Koller got him on his back.
But then stepped up Adam Kinyon.
Kinyon picked up a 16-2 major decision to make it 31-24, sealing the victory for Lomira.
“Adam beat him before (earlier this year) but not by as much,” Meyer added. “Then we were confident with Tyler Garriety on the end. There were some big wins.”
Garriety ended the match with a 7-0 decision to give Lomira the 34-24 win.
Jimmy Miley (138-pounds) recorded Lomira’s only pin in the match, coming in 1:38. Mason Neuman (7-2), Erik Danner (132) added decision wins while Ray Manthey (160) won by technical fall, 18-3. Jordan Michael also added a win, by forfeit.
Neuman’s win came in overtime after he blew a lead with just seconds left after a 2-0 lead. But he scored five quick to end the match.
