Austin McHugh rallied back to win his 145-pound bout by pin, lifting the Arlington High School wrestling team to a 38-34 victory over host Mahopac on Wednesday.
McHugh was trailing 4-0 early in the first period of the day’s final bout but bounced back in the second period to get the pin.
“It was his biggest win of the season,” Arlington coach Fred Perry said. “He’s only a sophomore and he’s improving every day.”
Arlington (13-4) received wins by pin from Ulises Olmedo (106), Branden Kelly (160) and Gabe Duden (170). Kelly needed only 30 seconds to pin his opponent.
The Admirals picked up triumphs by decision from Elias Perks (132), Brady Robin (138), Mike Stanek (152) and Nick Basso (220). Robin and Stanek won by 17-5 and 13-1 major decisions, respectively.
“It was a total team effort. We knew Mahopac had a close one with John Jay. The kids came out fired up and determined in their house,” Perry said.
Arlington will look to win the Dutchess Cup for a fifth consecutive year as the top team from Dutchess County at the Beacon Bulldog Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
“I think this match will help us. It’s going to be a big confidence booster for everybody,” Perry said.
