Seven Section 1 wrestlers have received wild card bids to the New York State Championships, which brings the total of state qualifiers from the section to 37. All 30 champions from Section 1 received automatic bids.
Five Division 1 (large school) wrestlers earned wild cards in Yonkers junior Justin Lopez (99 pounds), John Jay-EF sophomore Randy Earl (106), Fox Lane freshman Matt Grippi (132), John Jay-EF senior Grant Frederick (145) and Horace Greeley senior Brock Cvijanovich (220).
Two spots were given to local Division 2 (small school) wrestlers, and both came from the 99-pound weight class — Putnam Valley freshman Mikey Bruno and Pleasantville junior James Bathon. Bruno and Bathon are both former section champs who will be making their second appearance at states.
The wild cards are determined by several factors, including where wrestlers have placed in the past and which section they are from. The sections that have performed well at states in the recent past receive more bids. Much of it also depends on the depth and quality of each weight class around the state.
The state championships will be held on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
