February 17, 2015 BASKETBALL: Bucyrus at Wynford
HOLMES TOWNSHIP – Wynford trailed 9-0 before taking a shot.
The Royals spent the rest of the night climbing the hill — and did it.
Wynford trailed by as many as 13 and by five entering the fourth quarter, before rallying for a 42-38 Northern 10 Conference victory over Bucyrus at W.R. Donnenwirth Gymnasium.
“We got off to a slow start offensively to say the least,” Wynford coach Amy Taylor-Sheldon said. “But we kept our composure.”
The Redmen led, 13-0, when Kelci Simms scored with 4:05 left in the first quarter. But Simms spent much of the night on the bench in foul trouble and eventually fouled out, changing the complexion of the game.
“When Kecli went out, it took us out of our rhythm of things,” Bucyrus coach Bethany Guinther said. “It didn’t seem like she got a break all night.”
Simms was held to five points, all in the first half. Megan Flaherty absorbed some of the scoring, leading the Redmen with 12 points.
“Sarah (Ogden) played physical on offense and defense,” Taylor-Sheldon said. “It is a very big order to guard Simms.”
Bucyrus (11-11, 9-9 N10) led at every quarter break, but couldn’t finish.
“We were able to move the ball around early,” Guinther said. “It left our guards open. But that changed when Kelci went out. We only shot 12 free throws.”
Ogden had 13 points to lead Wynford (13-8, 12-6) and Ellie Richmond added 11.
Bucyrus won the junior varsity game 38-31.
