Grace Ping, a 12-year-old from Minnesota, set an age group world record in the 5,000 meters Friday at the New Balance National Outdoors meet with a time of 16:44.80.
That was second in the race behind Weini Kelati from Heritage High (Leesburg, Va.). By the way, Kelati, an Eritrean immigrant, is 19 and in her final season of high school eligibility.
Ping, who just finished seventh grade and turns 13 next month, finished 14th at the Nike Cross Nationals last fall and burst on the scene when she won the high school championship race at Roy Griak Invitational in her home state in December.
She is scheduled to run the 3,200 meters Saturday at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
