Fair Park’s defense pulled off something very few have ever done in picking up its first win of 2016 Thursday night at Independence Stadium.
The Indians returned three interceptions for touchdowns in beating Huntington 38-26.
Not even one of the best defenses in the school’s history, the vaunted “Wrecking Crew” of 1974, pulled this off. The 1974 team tied a school record with eight shutout wins and until Byrd made the state finals in 2013, was the last public school in Shreveport-Bossier City to play in a state championship game.
Kenny Joyner’s 76-yard interception return for a touchdown against North Caddo was the only one on the season for the ’74 team.
The 1974 team, coached by Jimmy Orton, finished 12-2-1 and had four shutout wins in the regular season and proceeded to shutout four of their five playoff opponents on the path to the state title game played at then State Fair Stadium. Tara of Baton Rouge defeated the Indians 10-9.
It’s only regular season loss came to Captain Shreve 14-13, as the Gator defense came up with the winning touchdown. Shreve defensive end Greg Steglich stripped the ball from a Fair Park ball carrier and ran for the deciding touchdown.
Thursday night Chris Allen had two of those three in the fourth quarter. His first was a 98-yard return that gave Fair Park a 30-26 lead. Then he added a 54-yard return to pad the Indian lead.
The 98-yarder is not a school record. That record would belong to Ron Rice and Randy Williams who both returned one 100 yards. Rice got his in 1951 against Haynesville and Williams returned his in 1983 against Woodlawn.
The only local athlete to have three returns for a touchdown in one game was Dennis Bamburg of Parkway. Bamburg returned three kickoffs for scores in the Panthers 21-20 win over Green Oaks in 1988.
