COACH OF THE YEAR
Micah Coleman, Natchitoches Central (Natchitoches)
Under Coleman’s guidance, Natchitoches won the Class 5A state title with a 32-3 record, culminating with a pulse-pounding 54-52 triumph over Scotlandville in the state final.
Player of the Year
Ja’Vonte Smart, PG, Scotlandville Magnet (Baton Rouge), 6-4/190, So.
The sophomore sensation cemented his status as one of the nation’s top recruits following a season in which he led Scotlandville Magnet to the Class 5A state final. A First Team All-State selection and a 2015 USA Basketball U16 National Team member, Smart averaged 22.8 points with 6.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game to earn the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year Award.
Brandon Rachal, G, Natchitoches Central, 6-5/190, Jr.
Rachal delivered a Class 5A state title for the Chiefs (32-3), scoring a game-high 24 points in the championship-clinching 54-52 win over Scotlandville.
Jalen Johnson, F, University Lab (Baton Rouge), 6-6/190, Sr.
Johnson was named MVP of the Class 3A state championship game, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor for 28 points in a 98-65 rout of Wossman, handing University Lab its third straight title.
Wayde Sims, F, University Lab (Baton Rouge), 6-6, 210, Sr.
A Lousiana State signee, Sims contributed 21.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for the Class 3A state champs.
Robert Williams F North Caddo (Vivian), 6-8/200, Sr.
A dominant force in the paint, Williams averaged 25 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots per game for North Caddo, which bowed out in the Class 2A semifinals.
