North Buncombe graduate Alex Destino is currently in the middle of the longest hit streak (20 games) by a University of South Carolina baseball player since 2010.
Destino is a sophomore outfielder who is batting .360 with 26 RBIs, four home runs and six doubles. Each of those totals is the second-highest in the lineup for the Gamecocks (24-4), who are ranked No. 2 in the country.
Destino has started all 28 games for them, but his health was in question after going 2-for-2 with an RBI in Friday’s 4-0 win at Vanderbilt. Destino crashed into the outfield wall in left field while making a catch that ended the fifth inning. Doctors were going to examine him on Saturday.
Destino is the first South Carolina player to hit safely in 20 or more games since a 22-game streak put together by Jackie Bradley Jr. six years ago.
Destino graduated from North Buncombe in 2014 and was a two-time Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year.
