RHINEBECK – It didn’t strike Michaella Lamont that it could happen until the middle of Saturday’s game:
She had a chance at history.
Lamont was part of the Pine Plains volleyball team that defeated Tuxedo for the Section 9 Class D title this past November. Three months later, she was on the court when the Bombers girls basketball team blew out S.S. Seward to win the Section 9 Class C crown.
Saturday, she pulled off the trifecta, as her Pine Plains softball team defeated Chester in the Section 9 Class C championship game.
Lamont became the first student athlete in Stissing Mountain High School history to win three Section 9 titles in three different sports over the course of one school year.
When the last out was recorded, it sunk in.
“It just feels awesome,” Lamont said. “It actually meant a lot more for me than it did the rest of the team, personally … I mean, going out senior year with a bang was awesome.”
Coach Les Funk, who not only led the softball team to its first section title since 2008, but in the winter also co-coached the girls basketball team to the state final, felt the accomplishment was impressive.
“Winning three section titles, three sports in a row — it says a lot,” the coach said. “There’s some talent there.”
Lamont and the Bombers will look to put that talent to use at 3 p.m. on Thursday, when Pine Plains takes on Section 1 champion North Salem in the regional semifinals in Rhinebeck.
North Salem defeated Haldane, 17-5, in the Section 1 Class C final.
Although it wasn’t in the cards, Lamont was hoping for a rematch with the Blue Devils on the softball field. In February, the Bombers defeated Haldane in the girls basketball regional semifinals.
“I wish we were playing Haldane just because of the basketball run-ins. I think that would have been cool,” Lamont said Saturday. “I don’t know too much about North Salem. I’ve been reading articles about them, we’ll see what they have.”
While Lamont has three titles to her name this school year, the three other seniors on the Pine Plains softball team captured two section championships in 2015-16.
Along with winning a softball title, Catie Gomm was a part of the Bombers’ field hockey section championship in October. Haleigh Funk has a basketball title to go with her softball title, and Anna Lonczak was not only a softball section champion, but a volleyball champion.
“We’ve got a bunch of those kids with two titles,” Les Funk said. “It’s a credit to these guys as seniors. That’s what the younger kids are looking to.”
