Pine View held off a late Tooele comeback on Friday night to upset the second-seeded Buffaloes 38-36 on the road and book a spot in next week’s 3AA semifinals against Dixie.
Tooele scored late trailing 38-30, but the two-point conversion failed.
The Buffaloes recovered the onside kick but senior lineman Tyler Heaton sacked quarterback Austin Meono on the final play to end the game.
“We were able to move the ball and stay pretty balanced between passing and running,” Pine View head coach Brett Gifford said. “Defensively, we did a good job of forcing them into some things they weren’t comfortable with.”
Quarterback Ryan Javines started the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run, followed by a Connor Brooksby field goal and a 19-yard touchdown reception by Dylan Hendrickson as PV jumped out to a 17-0 lead.
Javines completed 23 of 31 passing attempts for 345 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and also ran for 40 yards.
Running back Jacob Mpungi ran in from two yards out as the Panthers led 24-17 at halftime.
Mpungi rushed for 152 yards and also had 130 yards receiving, with three total touchdowns.
He caught an 81-yard TD pass and ran for a 3-yard score as PV pushed its lead to 38-23 in the second half.
The Buffaloes charged back with an 18-yard touchdown run by Matthew Vigil and a 13-yard touchdown catch by Vigil, but it wasn’t enough as the third-seeded Panthers held on.
Michael Moten caught 10 passes for 126 yards and the Panthers gained 543 yards on offense while forcing four Tooele turnovers.
As a team, PV converted 12 of 17 third-down attempts.
Buffaloes running back Lincoln Powers rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
