The varsity field hockey season in Louisville began in earnest with the start of the 44th annual Apple Tournament held at Sacred Heart Academy.
After an evening of junior varsity and freshman games on Friday, Saturday began with the start of the varsity competitions, as Atherton, North Oldham, South Oldham, Male, Assumption, Sacred Heart, Manual, and Kentucky Country Day all picking up victories. Rain poured on the field throughout the day, at times suspending play due to heavy downpours and lightning.
In the first varsity game of the day, Atherton recorded a 1-0 victory over Eastern on a second-half goal from Ally Cerqua. North Oldham followed that up with a 6-0 rout of Seneca, before South Oldham thrashed Holy Cross 7-, in an injury-shortened game. South Oldham’s Skye Thompson scored five goals in the win. Male then knocked off Presentation, 3-1.
Assumption began the afternoon varsity matches with a 9-0 defeat of Collegiate. Assumption had eight different scorers, with only Jenna McKune scoring a pair of goals. Assumption led 3-0 at the half before blowing it open with six goals in the second half.
The Valkyries then knocked off Ballard, 3-1, in a match that was suspended for an hour due to severe weather. Caroline Liston, Mattie Tabor, and Abby Birk all scored for the tournament hosts.
In the evening, Manual and CAL played to a 2-2 tie, and KCD finished off the day with a 2-0 victory over Mercy.
The Apple Tournament continues on Monday with Butler taking on Seneca, Sacred Heart facing Collegiate, Eastern facing South Oldham, and Atherton vs. Holy Cross.
