Fondness for Charlie Metcalf is exemplified by the fact that a GoFundMe web page for the longtime Asheville High assistant football coach has raised more than $9,000 in six days.
Metcalf, 63, was recently diagnosed with cancer for a third time since 2013.
He is in Houston this week having tests done, and if all goes well, Metcalf will travel back and forth between Asheville and Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for his treatment. The GoFundMe page has a fund-raising goal of $10,000 and was created to help the Metcalf family with expenses such as airfare, lodging and meals.
The page can be found here.
Metcalf has been a coach at Asheville since 2004. He is the presently the Cougars’ assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Asheville (1-3) is idle this week before its next game Sept. 23 at home against Winston-Salem Carver (0-4).
