All week, questions have surrounded who is going to play and who is going to coach in the Pennfield vs. Charlotte boys basketball game at Charlotte Friday night.
Steve Ernst had quit as head coach of the boys basketball team at Charlotte on Monday. According to the Lansing State Journal, his resignation came after he was placed on his second individual development plan aimed at addressing the number of technical fouls he’s received during games. That number stands at six over the last 30 games, according to Ernst.
Reports, also in the Lansing State Journal, followed that the Charlotte players also were talking about the option of not playing against Pennfield if their coach was not rehired. Charlotte and Pennfield both are members of the Interstate 8 Conference.
As of Thursday night, Pennfield coaches learned the game would still go on but Charlotte would be coached by its athletic director, Dan Stafford.
“After another special board meeting that went late last night. Steve Ernst was not recalled to coach. The athletic director will be interim coach,” Pennfield boys coach Steve Grimes told the Enquirer.
The Lansing State Journal reported Friday that Charlotte student and basketball team member Collin Garn, 18, told board members after the meeting that they didn’t listen to students or community members.
Garn said Wednesday that team members had not decided if they’ll play in Friday’s home game against Pennfield without Ernst.
