A pair of defending district champions rose in the LHSAA’s unofficial power rankings after completing impressive two-game sweeps of their most competitive rivals.
Airline beat Byrd 5-3 and 9-1 to jump from fourth to third in 5A, eight spots ahead of the Yellow Jackets. Captain Shreve handed the Vikings their only district loss back in March, and their only other three losses in 23 games came to top five teams, including two to No. 1 Lafayette.
Benton (11-11, 4-0 District 1-4A) suffered 11 losses in 18 non-district games, but the Tigers remained unbeaten in District 1-4A play with 8-1 and 10-0 wins over North DeSoto (14-7, 2-2) last week. The Griffins dropped down to No. 8 in 4A, while Benton moved up three spots to No. 7.
Minden (10-9, 4-0) remained undefeated as well with a sweep of No. 32 Northwood, but a weaker schedule kept the Crimson Tide down at No. 26. No. 24 Haughton (13-10, 3-4) and No. 25 Captain Shreve join Byrd and Airline as the other 5A teams in position to make the playoffs.
North Webster (17-6, 4-0 District 1-3A) won a pair of games to jump to No. 7 in 3A, 13 spots ahead of district rival Loyola (14-10, 1-1). Calvary (13-10, 6-0 District 1-2A) swept No. 29 North Caddo (13-5, 2-4) to extend its win streak to 10 games and set up a crucial two-game series this week between the No. 16 Cavaliers and No. 31 Lakeside (9-10, 6-0), which could also decide the District 1-2A title.
No. 8 Cedar Creek (14-8, 7-0 District 1-1A) lost to Captain Shreve but handed No. 19 D’Arbonne Woods (14-7, 6-1) its first district loss to remain unbeaten in 1-1A. The six other teams in the district would not make the playoffs if the season ended today.
