Al Blades Jr. transfers to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale)

Sophomore defensive back Al Blades Jr. is transferring from University School to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), he announced on Twitter.

Blades has among the most famous football names in South Florida. His father played safety at Plantation, went on to the University of Miami and then was with the San Francisco 49ers for two seasons before he was killed in a car accident in 2003. Blades Jr.’s uncles are former Miami stars Brian and Bennie Blades.

Blades Jr. committed to Miami as a freshman last spring but decommitted in the aftermath of coach Al Golden’s firing.

Aquinas, the two-time 7A state champion, finished 13-1 and ranked No. 9 in the Super 25.

Joining Blades Jr. in the Aquinas secondary will another son of an NFL player. Asante Samuel Jr. also will be a junior.
