Alabama lands another primo commit in 4-star DT Akial Byers

The Alabama recruiting roll continues, with another of Nick Saban’s primary targets committing on Sunday.

Four-star defensive tackle Akial Byers, a Fayetteville, Ark. native, committed to the Crimson Tide on Sunday, choosing Alabama ahead of the likes of Ohio State, Ole Miss and Oklahoma, among others. According to an interview with his coach, it appears that Alabama and Ohio State were his two primary finalists, with the relationship built between Byers and the Alabama coaches eventually making the difference.

“The reason it’s Alabama is in a span of two or three weeks he got 15 to 20 offers from some really big-time schools,” Fayetteville head coach Benji Mahan told BamaOnLine, a 247 Sports site. “And to me the difference in Alabama and some of those is, it wasn’t just, ‘Hey we would like for you to come to our school’ and then just kind of done. Alabama not only gave him an offer, they invested in his life and built a relationship with him and his mom and his brother and with us as coaches. That to me is what separated them.

“When we left Ohio State, me and him, I said what do you think and he said Alabama. I say why? He said Coach (Karl) Dunbar and Coach (Billy) Napier and that was the bottom line.”

Byers is so coveted because of his athleticism, not his size. You can see some of his more impressive moments from a dominant junior season below.

For now, Byers is set with a future in Tuscaloosa, assuming nothing drastic emerges to change his mind before February. Given his relationship with the coaches who recruited him, one would think it would take something quite major to force that kind of a break.
