The San Diego Padres have assigned Fletcher’s Logan Allen to their Class-A affiliate in Fort Wayne (Ind.).

The Fort Wayne TinCaps have been part of the Midwest League since 1993, which make them its oldest franchise. Their season opener is Thursday at Lake County (Ohio).

Allen, 18, is one of Western North Carolina’s youngest-ever baseball draft picks.

He was selected in the eighth round of the 2015 draft by Boston and traded in November. Allen played his junior and senior seasons of high school baseball for the IMG Academy out of Bradenton, Fla.

Last year, Allen split time between Boston’s rookie-level affiliate and Single-A Lowell. He posted a combined 1.11 ERA with 26 strikeouts and only one walk in eight starts for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox and Lowell.
