Kickapoo commands the News-Leader’s American Family Insurance ALL-USA Ozarks Performers of the Week list in the wake of a basketball trip to Columbia.
The Chiefs girls basketball team won the Class 5 state championship on Saturday with a 63-53 win over Kirkwood in the final. The boys team beat Lee’s Summit 85-81 in Thursday’s semifinal, but fell to No. 1-ranked Chaminade 72-59 in Saturday’s Class 5 championship game.
Junior, Kickapoo girls basketball
Sanders closed her junior year with a monumental game against Kirkwood in Saturday’s season finale. Sanders put up 20 points and hauled down 15 rebounds for a double-double.
Senior, Kickapoo boys basketball
“Ice” ended his career with two of his best high school basketball performances. The Drury Panthers signee scored 22 points in the semifinals against Lee’s Summit. He gamely rose to the challenge of playing Chaminade and Duke basketball signee Jayson Tatum, the No. 2 senior recruit in the nation. Johnson scored 14 points in the final game.
Sophomore, Kickapoo girls basketball
Wersinger was instrumental in getting Kickapoo into the championship game with her performance in a 55-49 win over Liberty in the semifinals. The sophomore doubled her season scoring average of 13 points per game with 26 points against Liberty. She went on to score 14 points in the title game.
