BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – The athletic teams at American History High School are nicknamed the Bald Eagles.

The five starters on the boys basketball team should be named the Ironmen.

The visitors from Newark, N.J., went all the way with just five players on Monday and erased a nine-point halftime deficit to blow past Mount Pleasant 66-57 at the Concord Classic.

The freshman guard duo of Deshawn Latham (23 points) and Papie Roberts (16 points) was sensational, and 6-foot-6 senior Yvens Monfluery was a pogo stick inside with 19 points and 21 rebounds for American History (7-4).

The Bald Eagles jumped to an 8-1 lead, only to see it quickly erased. Mount Pleasant (9-3), ranked third in Delaware, went on an 8-0 run capped by DeJon Backus’ fast-break layup created by Rob Myrick’s steal and assist.

American History surged back to a 14-9 lead after one quarter, but the Green Knights responded with another big run. Another fast-break score by Backus put the bow on a 12-2 surge to start the second quarter for Mount Pleasant.

The Green Knights kept it rolling, ripping off eight more in a row on two buckets and two free throws from Raheim Burnett and a putback by Richard Caldwell. Then Caldwell added a 3-pointer from the top of the key to send Mount Pleasant into the locker room ahead 34-25.

But the Bald Eagles found their second wind in the second half. American History scored 17 of the first 19 points in the third quarter, taking a 42-35 lead on a three-point play by Monfluery. The Green Knights scored six straight to cut the deficit back to one, but Latham closed the quarter with four free throws to give American History a 48-43 cushion.

Mount Pleasant managed one more run, scoring seven straight early in the fourth quarter and tying it at 50 on Burnett’s 18-footer with 4:37 to play. But the Bald Eagles outscored the Green Knights 16-7 the rest of the way.

Burnett led Mount Pleasant with 22 points off the bench. Caldwell added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Backus finished with six points and seven boards. American History put it away at the foul line, hitting 23 of 29 for the game.
