When there are Section V Championship trophies to hand out at cheerleading competitions, it seems certain that Fairport will take one back to its school.

Fairport earned the top score at the Section V Winter Cheerleading Championships on Saturday, the fourth consecutive season the team has won at a sectional competition.

Judges awarded Fairport’s 27-member team – there are also three alternates on the squad – a score of 115.95 in the Division I Large classification at Rochester Institute of Technology. Fairport has won at the last two Section V Fall and Winter Championships.

“That feeling of hitting a routine, that’s something not everyone gets to experience,” Fairport senior Whitney Huang said. “I get to experience this in my senior year, with a great group. It’s such a great feeling, amazing.”

Greece Athena, Webster Schroeder, Geneva, Hornell, Avon, Perry and Canaseraga joined Fairport as division winners and are eligible to compete at the state championships March 5 at Onondaga Community College. Warsaw and Wayne qualified for states with the highest scorers among the teams that finished second or lower in its division, according to Section V Cheerleading Committee coordinator Joanne Small.

“Devotion of the team is a factor,” Fairport senior Jess Cheer said. “We are a big family. Everyone has a job on the mat.

“It’s an amazing feeling to win. I wish we can keep experiencing it.”
