After more than 55,000 votes were cast in the Marsh Athlete of the Month voting, April’s winners are Shelbyville’s Natalie Weber and Columbus North’s Wyatt Barkes .
A softball standout for the Bears (15-3), Weber received 11,056 votes (37 percent). She was named an American Family Insurance Athlete of the Week after going 12-of-17 with six RBIs, six runs scored, three doubles between April 16-22. On the season, Weber is batting .554 and leads the Bears (15-3) in hits (36) and RBIs (29) and has 10 doubles and three home runs. A junior, she was struck out just twice in 71 plate appearances this season.
Barkes, a captain on Columbus North’s boys lacrosse team, received nearly 10,000 votes (38 percent). He was an American Family Insurance Athlete of the Week after scoring the game-winning point in the Bulldogs’ 16-15 victory over Avon April 19. He finished the game with seven goals and two assists. Barkes, who also plays football for Columbus North, has scored 26 goals in 12 games this season.
The Marsh Athlete of the Month is part of the IndyStar’s Indiana Sports Awards program, a multi-faceted program to bring statewide recognition to high school athletes and sports in Indiana.
