It’s only fitting for nine area basketball players to rake in statewide honors after this season.
After another great year on the court, a handful of area hoopers were named to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All-State list. Here’s who is gracing the list known as “BCAM’s Best” for the 2015-16 season.
No shocker here, but Port Huron Northern senior Kiana Votava was named to the Class A BCAM’s Best list.
The lone Huskies senior helped lead Northern to a Macomb Area Conference Red title and its second regional title in the last three seasons. On offense, Votava averaged 12.7 points and 2.1 assists per game and on defense she had 7.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.
Even those numbers can’t justify how lock-tight she was on defense throughout the season.
Marysville senior Devan Valko is the lone area player cracking the Class B BCAM’s Best list.
On the free throw line Valko was reliable, shooting 80 percent from the line while averaging 13.2 points per game. She also pulled down 4.4 rebounds per game and was the most aggressive player on the court more times than not.
Marysville senior Payton Husson and Marine City junior Karyssa Austin also earned a spot on the Honorable Mention list.
For the Mariners, Austin averaged 15 points per game while breaking five school records, including most career 3-pointers with 156.
Husson — a SUNY-Binghamton signee — had a heck of a season with 14.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game. With Husson and Valko running the show, the two Vikings will graduate after winning four straight MAC Gold titles.
The Greater Thumb Conference East had no shortage of players earning honors.
Marlette senior Haley Cross and Sandusky sophomore Haley Nelson each made the Class C BCAM’s Best list.
Cross averaged 11.7 points per game while leading Marlette to the GTC East title with a 9-1 conference record. Over in Sandusky, Nelson averaged 14.4 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game while leading the Redskins to a district title.
Three other GTC East players landed Honorable Mention in Sandusky sophomore Madysen Jansen, Marlette sophomore Emily Schaub and Brown City freshman Kendal Muxlow.
Jansen averaged 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, Schaub averaged 12.6 points and 5 rebounds per game and Muxlow averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
