A volunteer assistant football coach at Mar Vista High in Imperial Beach, Calif., has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a ninth-grade girl for about six months, according to CBS8 in San Diego.
Edward Mendoza, 27, has been a volunteer assistant coach since 2013, the school said. He was charged with multiple child-molestation counts.
Police said the student’s father discovered she was having “extensive phone conversations with Mendoza and was having an inappropriate relationship with him.”
A spokesperson for the Sweetwater Union High School District told CBS8 that Mendoza has not worked in the district since the football season ended. Police said the cases are unrelated.
In a statement, the school district said Mendoza did not have an assignment with the school district since the end of football season and said he is not a teacher or a substitute.
