Astronaut High brought a Titusville native home on Thursday with the naming of Kyle Gilreath as head boys basketball coach.
Gilreath, an assistant coach at Ft. Myers for the last five years, is a 2002 graduate of Titusville High, where his dad, Larry Gilreath, coached the boys basketball team and led it to a state runner-up finish in Class 3A in 1981.
While obtaining bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Florida, Kyle Gilreath worked as a manager and graduate assistant under Gators coach Billy Donovan from 2004 through ’09.
The new War Eagles coach met the players Thursday morning and then spoke about his plan to improve the program.
“You’ve got to change the culture,” he said. “If you build the right program and get kids to realize they’re part of something big, they’ll do anything for you.”
Gilreath is heavily involved in basketball training, working for Pure Sweat Basketball as a skills coach and for Better Basketball, a basketball instructional video company.
Cook, Haig going into conference hall of fame
Rockledge High graduate Bryan Cook and longtime Brevard soccer icon Fidgi Haig will be inducted into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame on March 5 at Embry-Riddle College in Daytona Beach.
Cook, a member of the Rockledge state championship baseball team of 2004, played for Nova Southeastern from 2006 through ’08. He was a two-time all-SSC first-team player and, in 2008, was all-America and the SSC Player of the Year. He is second in career home runs for Nova Southeastern, with 30.
Haig, who will be inducted posthumously, coached the Satellite High girls soccer team to state championships in 2002 and 2003. He played on a men’s national title team at Florida Tech in 1988 and later on the Haitian Olympic team. Haig also coached men’s and women’s soccer at FIT, where he is a member of the sports hall of fame.
