Jordan Penkitis and some of her friends on the Pittsford Mendon field hockey team have been here before.
The Vikings are undefeated near the end of September. They have the look of a Section V champion, but no Mendon field hockey team has reached that status, according to coach Kara Carpenter.
“Last year, we were undefeated until the sectional semifinals,” Penkitis said. “So this year, 9-0. I’m really excited to make it sectionals, and hopefully, we will win the block (Section V championship trophy) this year.”
Penkitis is a driving force on a talented team that includes another member of the 2015 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Field Hockey team, senior Mackenzie Peterson.
A senior center midfielder, Penkitis has scored nine goals with five assists this season. Carpenter credits Penkitis with also helping to anchor Mendon’s defense.
Penkitis plans to play at either William Smith College or the State University College at Geneseo.
“Jordan and forwards Caroline Cullinan and Peterson are the top players in our league,” Carpenter said. “They work very well together.”

Another goal: “I used to play ice hockey, but then I decided that was too much travel for a sport I only enjoyed socially. So I decided to pick up field hockey freshman year, and I really liked it.”
3 things to know about field hockey: “It’s not as complicated as it sounds. It’s really fun to watch and, it’s not at all like ice hockey.”
Did you know in field hockey: “We’re not allowed not push each other. You can’t hit (the ball) with your feet, and you can only score inside the semi-circle.”
