Austin (Texas) Westlake retook the lead with 10:10 remaining in the fourth quarter and held off No. 11 Katy for a thrilling 32-29 victory on Friday night.
After Westlake broke a 22-22 tie on a 28-yard field goal by Mauro Montemayor, the Chaps opened the lead further when Texas commits QB Sam Ehlinger hit Andrew Boykin for a 17-yard touchdown with 2:25 left in the game.
Katy, however, was not going away. JC Angulo caught a 64-yard pass from Rocky Emery 19 seconds later and the margin was back to three. But an onside attempt failed and Westlake was able to finish off the victory.
Ehlinger finished 18 for 30 for 250 yards with one touchdown passing and ran for another 64 yards. Boykin had seven catches for 103 yards for last season’s 6A D1 runner-up.
For Katy’s ground-based attack, Deondrick Glass carried the ball 16 times for 173 yards with touchdowns of 37 and 59 yards.
After Katy went undefeated a year ago, this was its first loss since the 6A D2 state final in 2014. According to the Houston Chronicle, Katy had not lost a season opener since 2008.
