Monday afternoon, Pensacola High Athletic Director Mike Bennett accepted the position of head football coach at Bay High after 20 years of service at PHS.
“I’m going to Bay High School to coach and I’m excited about coaching again,” Bennett said. “I wish Pensacola High all the luck and I love Pensacola High. Got a great coach now … Mike Mincy has been doing a fine job.”
Bennett has not been assigned a start day at Bay High, but will be ready for next year’s competition.
“The only bad thing about the Bay job is that you’ve gotta play against Pensacola High,” said Bennett, referring to District 1-5A play. “When competition starts, you want to win.”
But the level of competition won’t seem to block out Bennett’s fond memories with Pensacola High, and especially his football players. Bennett served as head coach for 19 years and spent the last year serving as athletic director.
“I have a lot of great friendships and memories at PHS,” Bennett said. “A lot of the players I’ve coached I think about a lot and will stay in touch with those guys.
“I’ve been in Escambia County a long time. It’s hard to leave, because it’s a great school system with a great superintendent. There are a lot of good coaches and football players in Escambia County. This (Bay) is the next chapter of my life and it was just time to make this move.”
